The Lesser Goldfinch

The Lesser Goldfinch

Just outside my living room’s double doors,  I have 2 goldfinch feeders. Both are Yankee Droll finch feeders which are made of heavy plastic,  one  with 18 perches the other smaller with about 10 perches.  Both feeders are filled with nyjer seeds which they eat through small slits in the feeder.  Sometimes as many as 30 finches are trying to feed at the same time.  This causes many fights between the males trying to establish their territory.  In the fall the American  goldfinches arrive from their breeding area in the northern part of the U.S.  They compete with the lesser goldfinch for a perch on the feeder.  They are a bit larger than the lesser goldfinch.  But they are fun to watch flying around trying to find a perch to land on.  The lesser goldfinch stays around the entire year,  so I enjoy them all year.
