“Boobie Bird Invasion” of Port Aransas, Texas
August 13th, 2010 by Jack Kidd`
According to a story in “The South Jetty”, Port Aransas’ weekly newspaper reported earlier this summer that several boobies appeared on the beach of this small Texas Gulf Coastal town. In spite of their funny name. they are beautiful as well as being a superb and graceful flier. Many of the tourist and residents were interested in seeing this rare bird for this area. One in particular became interested in a baseball found on the beach where some children were playing. Someone threw the ball and the boobie caught it in midair. Then when was in the water the boobie pushed the ball with its sharp beak. Boobies are birds of the open ocean and only come to land during breeding season. Rarely seen on the Texas coast their nearest breeding sites are in the Dry Totrugas and the Merida peninsular of Mexico.
